Background to the Foundation

For over 300 years, the Tempest family have been involved in some form of education, particularly providing elementary schooling for poor children and orphans. Notably, were the two schools in Yorkshire, Broughton School (set up in 1820 through the benefaction of Stephen Tempest), and the school in Gargrave (set up by Sir Charles Tempest in 1850).

Here, the rudiments of the Christian religion, reading, writing and arithmetic were taught to the children of estate workers (see The Tempests of Broughton, by M. E Lancaster). When Warnborough College (Oxford) was established in 1973 by Ethyl and Brenden Tempest-Mogg, a focus on charity work remained a priority.  Then, the College at its woodland campus on Boars Hill provided, for the RSPCA, grazing for neglected donkeys and a lake for injured swans.

Fundraising was held annually for the Blind Society, the Scouts, and health needs for a village project in Ghana. Warnborough and the Tempest-Mogg family provided financial aid, scholarships and grants to students from Third World countries to acquire an education in their own countries or in the UK. The local community were always welcomed to host charity events to benefit worthy causes.

Since Warnborough has been in Canterbury, it has continued to provide scholarships. Through its Warnborough Humanitarian Outreach (WHO) programme, it has worked with charities in Africa.

Warnborough sponsors the annual Kent Arts Conference which looks to inspire young children art through its art competitions and its challenging themes. Warnborough has sponsored projects helping victims of violence and orphans, presented climate change seminars, employing workers with disabilities, and provided skills training for young adults and ex-offenders to be employed.

In 2020, the Warnborough Foundation CIO was formally established to reach out to disadvantaged communities in the United Kingdom and around the world.  The  Foundation  continues its mission to uplift communities through providing access and opportunities to quality education.

The Foundation seeks people to give generously to fulfill Warnborough Foundation aims and objectives. Also, support in the form of time, expertise, and other resources can make a huge difference to those in need. We welcome all those who wish to be part of our unique vision.

Thank you.
